STOP MOTION ANIMATION

A selection of work build on Adobe Creative Cloud programs illustrating moving images.

Overview

Stop motion animation is a filmmaking technique where objects are moved in small increments between photographed frames, creating the illusion of movement.

Two examples of stop motion animation are "Wallace & Gromit" (clay animation) and "The Nightmare Before Christmas" (puppet animation).

The process included developing storyboards, crafting miniature props, adjusting lighting for continuity, and capturing hundreds of still images with small, intentional movements.

Objective

As a video editor and designer, I was responsible for designing and producing a series of stop motion animations and GIFs that balance a retro, playful tone with polished execution showcasing skills for filmography.

Each GIF needed to have a complete loop.

Each stop motion needed to feel cohesive within the project’s visual identity while using various textures, movement styles, and color palettes.

My role included building miniature sets, capturing frame-by-frame photography, editing for seamless motion, and integrating sound for added impact. The goal was to deliver engaging, shareable animations that stood out creatively.

All final products were used on Photoshop, Animate and After Effects and Premiere Pro.

I aimed to create a retro-inspired animation that’s instantly relatable, so viewers can quickly grasp the concept. After establishing that connection, I infused the piece with humor to keep it engaging and memorable.

“The Three Brothers”

Part 1: The Meeting with Death

Long ago, three brothers traveled together and came upon a deadly river that no one dared to cross. Using their magical skill, they built a bridge and safely crossed, cheating Death itself.

But Death, angered by their trickery, appeared before them. Instead of punishment, he offered each brother a gift of their choosing, rewarding their cleverness. Each accepted, unaware that these gifts would reveal their true nature—and change their fate forever

What I learned

I began the with no animation experience, only basic Adobe editing skills. I learned more about After Effects and Illustrator than in my internships, gaining confidence in creating effects. Both projects were challenging yet rewarding, teaching me timing, movement, audio, storyboarding, drawing, and sewing.

I also learned GIF creation for smooth looping animations and used onion skinning to improve timing, movement, and frame accuracy.
